Overview

The task was to conceptualize and design a printed version of Magnetic Magazine, an online publication focusing on progressive music culture. The goal was to create a visually engaging and tactile experience for readers while translating the magazine’s digital identity into a cohesive print format. This printed version was intended for distribution at global events like music festivals and art shows, appealing to an international, tech-savvy audience.
Concept

For the magazine's theme, I focused on the immersive nature of music festivals and progressive music culture. The featured article, “Marshmello and Subtronics Headline U.S. Debut of S2O,” inspired the cover and feature article design.
The cover design depicts a top-down view of a pool with Marshmello’s iconic helmet resting at the bottom, symbolizing immersion in music and culture.
For the articles, I maintained a cohesive theme with bold visuals, contemporary layouts, and interactive elements like QR codes to bridge the gap between print and digital. Additionally, to get some custom images for my magazine, I rigged and posed 3D models to fit the theme of the magazine.
Reflection

This project taught me how to create a cohesive visual identity that bridges print and digital. Designing for a tech-savvy and culture-conscious audience required me to balance bold, modern visuals with functional elements like a clean grid system and accessible typography. I gained valuable experience in creating layouts that not only engage readers visually but also guide them seamlessly between printed and digital content, thanks to the integration of QR codes and links.
The process of refining the cover design, inspired by the immersive S2O Festival, allowed me to experiment with blending artistic and functional elements to capture attention while maintaining clarity. By analyzing the magazine's target demographic, I learned how to align design choices with audience expectations and brand identity, ensuring the final product appeals to both readers and the client.
Changes from the original assignment:
Following teacher feedback, I improved the design by adjusting the body text colors for better legibility. On dark blue backgrounds, I used white for the body copy, while on light blue backgrounds, I opted for black. These changes significantly enhanced the readability of the magazine and ensured it met professional design standards.
